Sister Brigid Mary, S.P. (Mary Hurley) a Malden native, Cheverus alumna, and longtime Cheverus teacher passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. She was 77 years old and had been a Sister of Providence for 59 years.
Sister Brigid Mary entered the Congregation on July 22, 1959, and professed final vows on August 15, 1967. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
For 49 of her 59 years as a Sister of Providence, she taught primary and middle grades in schools in Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts. She retired from teaching in 2013, but stayed in Massachusetts until returning to the Motherhouse in 2018 to dedicate herself to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Brigid Mary was taught by the Sisters of Providence at Cheverus and returned to minister as a teacher here for 16 years.
In 2016, Sister was presented the Father Patrick Hally Award at the First Annual Cheverus Catholic Gala. The award recognized her efforts on behalf of Cheverus Catholic School. At the same time Sister Brigid Mary also received a recognition certificate from the City Council of Malden, Massachusetts, congratulating and thanking her for her service.
Sister was truly a gift to Cheverus. We are grateful to her and to all of the Sisters of Providence for their teaching us to “love the children first then teach them.”
