Classroom Behavior/Management
It is important to have expectations and establish routines for school. Behavioral goals are established to create a learning environment for all students and ensure good order in the classroom. Students are expected to follow all school and classroom rules. It is important for students to exhibit respectful efforts towards all teachers and classmates. If behavior issues arise they can be a disruption to classroom learning. Parents will be contacted when/if there are persistent behavioral issues.
Classroom Participation/Grading
Our school day begins at 7:40 and ends at 2:00. It is important for students to be prompt and prepared at the start of each day. Eating a good breakfast and having a good night sleep are extremely important for a successful day of learning. It is important for students to be engaged and participate throughout the day. Students are not only graded on written tests, but also in written and oral responses of the daily classwork/lessons and class participation. Listening, following directions, and being attentive is necessary and an essential goal of first grade.
Homework
Homework is the extension of the skills development and concepts that are taught in daily lessons. Homework is assigned nightly, Monday through Thursday. Students should complete the assignment neatly, correctly, and return it to school. While students are completing homework, parents should check, correct, and review when necessary. Part of homework, is the responsibility of the child to return the assignment to school the following day. It is always good to get into a homework routine. An example might be to finish the assignment with an adult, put it into the folder and then right into the backpack, then it is all ready for the morning.
In addition to nightly written work, students should also practice the following:
*Read with an adult for at least 15 minutes nightly.
*Study and practice spelling words nightly. Spelling words should be mastered not only for spelling, but reading, recognizing, and using them in sentences correctly.
*Study and practice high frequency words nightly. Students should not only master recognizing and reading these words, but also be able to spell and use them correctly while writing.
*Study and practice math facts nightly. Students should memorize and master the basic math facts. This will help with future math skills and concepts.
*Practice handwriting while using the first grade writing lines. Letter formation, size and shape, line quality, and spacing between letters and words are very important on all assignments.
Any extra help and practice can only be of benefit to the learning process for your child.
