Welcome to Grade 1 Room 13!
Contact Information
Should you need to contact me, my email address is [email protected]. You can also send a note or leave a message at the school phone number 781-324-6584. If you have time sensitive matters or if there is an emergency, it is best to contact the school office. I usually do not check emails during the day, as my focus is with students. Therefore, sometimes, I do not get to read emails until later in the evening. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Absences
If your child is sick, please keep them home. Please contact the office by telephone or email leaving a message which includes your child's name, grade, and state why your child is out. Students will be able to make up the missing work at home with an adult and then return the completed assignments to school.
Classroom Safety and Behavior Management
It is important to have safety procedures, expectations, and established routines for school. Behavioral goals are established to create a safe learning environment for all students and teachers. Students are expected to follow all school and classroom rules. It is important for students to exhibit respectful efforts towards all teachers and classmates. If behavior issues arise they can be a disruption to classroom learning. Parents will be contacted when or if there are persistent behavioral issues.
Classroom Participation and Grading
Our school day begins at 7:40 and ends at 2:00. It is important for students to be prompt and prepared at the start of each day. Eating a good breakfast and having a good night sleep are extremely important for a successful day of learning. It is important for students to be engaged and participate throughout the day. Students are not only graded on weekly tests and daily classwork, but also in everyday efforts of oral responses and class participation. Focusing, active listening, and following directions are essential and necessary goals for each students' success.
Homework
Homework is the extension of the skills and concepts that are taught in daily lessons. It is assigned nightly, Monday through Thursday. Students should complete the assignment neatly, correctly, and return it to school the following day. While students are completing homework, parents should review and correct the homework with your child, if necessary.
Part of homework is the responsibility of returning the assignment to school the following day. It is always good to get into a homework routine. After homework is completed and checked, the assignment should be put into the folder and then the folder right into the backpack, ready for the morning. It is good for students to learn this routine and about being responsible to return the completed assignment.
In addition to nightly written work, students should also practice the following:
*Read with an adult for at least 15 minutes nightly.
*Study and practice spelling words nightly. Spelling words should be mastered not only for spelling, but reading, recognizing, and using them in sentences for correct meaning.
*Study and practice high frequency words nightly. Students should not only master recognizing and reading these words, but also be able to spell and use them correctly while writing.
*Study and practice math facts nightly. Students should practice and master the basic math facts. This will help with future math skills and concepts.
*Students should practice handwriting skills for automaticity. Following the path of motion, working from top to bottom and left to right. Practice letter formation with correct size and shape. Use good line quality and correct spacing between words and sentences. Practice neatness all while using grade one writing lines. Automatic handwriting helps with students reading and writing.
Extra help and practice from home can only be of benefit to the learning process for your child.
