The overarching goals for second grade include encouraging positive socialization that enables students to learn from one another and ultimately, academic preparation for grade three. Another goal is prepare the children of Catholic faith for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Students participate in the community faith life of Cheverus School by attending Mass, usually on First Fridays and Holy Days.
Homework is given Monday through Thursday nights. Spelling, Reading and Math are assigned each of these nights. Other homework assignments include Religion, Science, English and Handwriting. Home assignments are to be completed in the homework tablet. Occasionally, a book will be sent home over the weekend to begin to study for a test or to read a chapter to someone at home.
Spelling homework is completed in the tablet. Each Monday the folder and tablet go home with the student and are to be returned by Thursday with all the work completed neatly. Reading homework is also completed in a tablet and returned by Thursday. Math homework may be practice fact sheets, the back of a math page or work in the math tablet. Religion, Science and English homework usually involves studying for a test.
Students are administered Reading and Spelling tests each Friday. Math, English, Science and Religion tests are administered when a chapter or unit has been completed. Two days are given to study for the test. In addition to these periodic assessments, progress reports and report cards are issued three times each during the school year.
The Collins Writing Program is used throughout the curriculum to teach written expression and graded on the FCA’s (focus correction areas). Most writing is sent home at the end of the year. Technology is an important part of our curriculum. We make use of several online programs. In Math we use xtramath.org to practice and master the facts. In spelling, we use Spellingcity.com/Cheverus to practice the spelling words and play games using the words. Both programs can be accessed at home. Progress can be monitored at school as well. The second grade also has time in computer lab to use both of these programs. We regularly make use of the interactive SmartBoard in the classroom for instruction as well.
