Welcome 2023 - 2024 School Year!
Welcome to First Grade! My name is Ms. Nayara Andrade and I will be your child's First Grade this year. If ever you need to contact me, my email address is nayara.andrade@cheverusschool.com. You may also send me a note or leave a message at the school phone number 781-324-6584.
Contact Information
The easiest way to contact me is by note or email. If you have time sensitive matters or if there is an emergency, you can please contact the school office. I do not/cannot check emails during the day, as I am with students and teaching all day. Therefore, sometimes, I do not get to read emails until later in the evening or until the early mornings. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Classroom Behavior/Management/Safety
It is important to have safety procedures, expectations, and establish routines for school. On the first day the students and I will sit down and create our own class rules and sign it. Behavioral goals are established to create a safe learning environment for all students and teachers to ensure good order in the classroom. Students are expected to follow all school and classroom rules. It is important for students to exhibit respectful efforts towards all teachers and classmates. If behavior issues arise they can be a disruption to classroom learning. Parents will be contacted when/if there are persistent behavioral issues.
Classroom Participation/Grading
Our school day begins at 7:40 and ends at 2:00. It is important for students to be prompt and prepared at the start of each day. Eating a good breakfast and having a good night sleep are extremely important for a successful day of learning. It is important for students to be engaged and participate throughout the day. Students are not only graded on weekly tests, but also in class participation, daily efforts, written and oral responses, and classwork/lessons. Listening, following directions, and being attentive is necessary and an essential goal of first grade. If a student is absent from school, students will need to make up the missing work at home with an adult and then return the completed assignments to school.
Homework
Homework is the extension of the skills and concepts that are taught in daily lessons. Homework is assigned nightly, Monday through Thursday. Students should complete the assignment neatly, correctly, and return it to school the following day. While students are completing homework, parents should check, correct, and review with your child, if necessary. Part of homework, is the responsibility of returning the assignment to school the following day. It is always good to get into a homework routine. After homework is completed and checked, the assignment should be put into the folder and then the folder right into the backpack, ready for the morning. It is good for students to learn this routine and responsibility.
In addition to nightly written work, students should also practice the following:
*Read with an adult for at least 15 minutes nightly.
*Study and practice spelling words nightly. Spelling words should be mastered not only for spelling, but reading, recognizing, and using them in sentences for correct meaning.
*Study and practice high frequency words nightly. Students should not only master recognizing and reading these words, but also be able to spell and use them correctly while writing.
*Study and practice math facts nightly. Students should memorize and master the basic math facts. This will help with future math skills and concepts.
*Practice handwriting while using the first grade writing lines. Working from top to bottom and left to right is important. Letter formation, size and shape, line quality, using correct spacing between letters and words and overall neatness is important for all assignments.
*Extra help and practice can only be of benefit to the learning process for your child.
